ক্ষুদ্র কৃষক উন্নয়ন ফাউন্ডেশন (SFDF)

The Small Farmers Development Foundation (SFDF) (ক্ষুদ্র কৃষক উন্নয়ন ফাউন্ডেশন) is a specialized government organization under the Rural Development and Co-operatives Division of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Co-operatives in Bangladesh.

Its primary focus is to elevate the socio-economic status of small-scale farmers, landless laborers, and marginalized rural families.

Key Objectives & Functions

• Collateral-Free Microloans: SFDF is a pioneering institution in Bangladesh that provides credit/microloans to small and marginal farmers without requiring traditional collateral. This helps them fund agriculture, livestock, and small poultry enterprises.

• Poverty Alleviation: Conducting targeted interventions to uplift landless laborers and smallholder families by helping them diversify their income sources.

• Skill Development & Training: Providing practical training on modern farming techniques, livestock management, and financial literacy to rural communities.

• Women Empowerment: A substantial portion of SFDF’s beneficiaries and micro-credit recipients are rural women, encouraging gender-inclusive financial independence.

Origin and History

• BARD Pilot Project: SFDF traces its roots back to 1975 as an experimental pilot project called the Small Farmers and Landless Wastes Development Project, initiated by the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD) in Comilla, Bogra, and Mymensingh.

• Institutionalization: After successful multi-phase implementation across regions like Patuakhali, Barguna, and Bhola, the project was officially transformed into an independent legal foundation under the Companies Act of 1994 to sustain and expand its impacts.
