The Ministry of Food (খাদ্য মন্ত্রণালয়) is a key ministry of the Government of Bangladesh responsible for formulating and implementing national food policies, ensuring food security, and managing the overall food supply chain of the country.

Key Functions

• Food Security: Ensuring the availability, accessibility, and affordability of food for all citizens, especially during emergencies, natural disasters, or food shortages.

• Procurement and Storage: Procuring food grains (mainly rice and wheat) directly from domestic farmers and international markets, and managing the country’s public food silos and godowns (LSD/CSD).

• Public Food Distribution System (PFDS): Operating various subsidized food distribution programs such as Open Market Sale (OMS), Food for Work (FFW), Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF), and the Food Friendly Program (Khaddo Bandhob Karmachari).

• Price Stabilization: Intervening in the open market by releasing government grain stocks to stabilize prices when market rates fluctuate excessively.

• Food Safety and Quality: Coordinating with relevant agencies to monitor and maintain the quality and safety standards of food grains distributed through the public system.

Key Departments & Agencies under the Ministry

1. Directorate General of Food (DG Food): The primary executive arm responsible for the procurement, storage, and distribution of food grains across the country.

2. Bangladesh Safe Food Authority (BFSA): An autonomous statutory body tasked with ensuring science-based food safety standards and regulating the manufacture, import, processing, storage, and sale of safe food.

3. Food Planning and Monitoring Unit (FPMU): Responsible for collecting data, monitoring the food security situation, and providing policy advice to the government.
