Islamic Foundation Introduction
Bangladesh gained independence in 1971 through a nine-month bloody all-out liberation war. Although the majority of the people of the country were in favor of the liberation war, a small group opposed the great liberation war on the pretext of keeping ‘Islamic solidarity’ and ‘Muslim brotherhood’ intact and joined hands with the then Pakistani dictatorial group and the occupying forces. By misinterpreting Islam, they tried to mislead the simple-hearted people and called the liberation war an anti-Islamic act and the freedom fighters and the freedom-seeking people as enemies of Islam. Not only propaganda, but by misinterpreting Islam, they carried out all un-Islamic activities against humanity including killing and looting with the occupying forces. Their activities were completely unjust and contrary to Islamic ideals. The liberation war was an all-out just war of the oppressed people against the invading tyrants in accordance with Islam. At that time, the image and prestige of the religion of Islam, which was accepted at home and abroad, was greatly damaged due to the anti-Islamic activities of vested interests.
In the context of this bitter experience, the need to properly propagate the true teachings and essence of Islam among the masses in independent Bangladesh was felt acutely. As a result, the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established the Islamic Foundation by an ordinance on March 22, 1975. The establishment of the Islamic Foundation as a statutory organization with the aim of properly expressing Islamic ideals and developing the liberal humanistic spirit of Islam was a golden harvest of immense potential of the far-reaching thoughts of the Father of the Nation.
